Three complete series have chronicled the ever-unfolding history of Shannara. While the Druid order is thrown into complete disarray, its members bickering over positions and politics, it falls to Penderrin Ohmsford, youngest scion of Shannara, to find and attempt to rescue its lost leader. She was tasked by Walker the Druid before he died to rebuild the Brooks Order by summoning members of all the Races to create a Third Druid Council and form a new order, one in which ditates of a single Druid would no longer be all that stood between civilization and anarchy, between reason and madness.
Fortunately, there is a druid who carries over from the last trilogy The Voyage of the Jerle Shannara Trilogy who is there to help the Ohmsfords.
One of these plots succeeds, and she disappears. Jarka Ruus Author s: There is a parallel between this series and Jerle in the fact that another male relative of Grianne’s has to save her. Along the way, they are stalked by traitorous Druid minions and their spider-like assassin accomplice, Aphasia Wye. Brooks writes his novels with the intention of readers being able to pick up with any book in the series, but it’s highly recommended to read the previous books to have the best appreciation for the High Druid trilogy.
Brooks handles the two plot lines effortlessly, never letting us grow tired of one before switching back to the other. This is clearly her story even as it’s Pen’s coming of age. The characters are interesting in this one, with Grianne’s redemption and the temptation of her old life actually making her a fascinating character.

Want to Read Currently Reading Read. Return to Book Page. It’s up to her nephew, Pen Ohmsford, as well as her faithful Dwarf servant, Tagwen, and fellow druid Ahren Elessedil to find out what happened to her and save her if it’s at all possible.
The other main characters — Pen, Tagwen, Ahren, and Khyber Ahren’s niece — are also nicely done, though less distinctive. I smiled as I watched Pen struggle with the conflict between his first young love for Cinnaminson, daughter of the Rover Captain, Gar Hatch, and the duties he knew he had assumed in the search for his aunt.
Grianne Ohsmford, the High Druid of Paranor, is despised and plotted against from within her own order. That being said, he still knows how to weave a fun adventure with heroes and villains, monsters, a magic macguffin to find. As you finish you want to move straight to the next volume. This book is not bad, if you’ve read the 9 previous books in this giant set of books spanning something like 1, years of history if the Four Lands. He’s young and impetuous, easily falling in love with the daughter of the airship captain they hire to take them on their journey.
So although what there was of this story was good, because there is no conclusion, I’ve only given two stars.

There are times when this goes on for a page or two, with the character just thinking about their situation, how they got there, and what they should do next. Aug 31, Pages. After the lackluster Voyage of the Jerle Shannara series Ilse WitchAntraxand MorgawrI had hoped Brooks wouldn’t visit Shannara again for awhile, as that series was very similar to all of uarka other books and didn’t offer very much new.
Shouldn’t they have been expecting and worrying about this? From the Hardcover edition. Brooks has been known to wallow in this stuff, so seeing the light but firm touch he has with continuity in this book was great.

Books of the Week. For being the first in a trilogy, Jarka Ruus still has an ending and answers many questions to the mysteries that were brought up in the beginning; Brooks knows where he is taking the story.

I thought the character had so much potential! Grianne’s young nephew Brookd turns out to be the only one with the power to find, and rescue Grianne, and the motley ajrka of companions who accompany Pen on the journey, and their own adventures along the way are exciting and engrossing. With The High Druid of ShannaraBrooks has once again burst onto the fantasy scene and re-established himself as a master of the genre! The place to find the Tanequil is in a forest on an island deep in the Charnal Mountains, so the journey begins and the first place they go to seek aid in this journey is to retrieve Ahren Elessdil, the elf who brought back the Elf Stones to his people rujs had sailed on the Jerle Shannara.
